WAMS at Power Grid Bangladesh: One Step Ahead Towards a Smarter Grid

As Bangladesh prepares its power grid for large-scale integration of variable renewable energy (VRE), advanced grid monitoring is becoming essential. Traditional monitoring systems were designed for predictable generation and are increasingly inadequate as solar and wind introduce more complex and fast-evolving disturbances. To address this challenge, the EEGIRE II project of GIZ Bangladesh, in partnership with Power Grid Bangladesh, piloted a Wide Area Monitoring System (WAMS)—a state-of-the-art digital solution already used by advanced transmission operators worldwide. As part of this activity, Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) were installed at eight strategic grid substations, enabling high-speed, high-resolution monitoring of grid conditions. This pilot is generating practical insights to assess the readiness, benefits, and scalability of WAMS in Bangladesh, supporting informed decision-making and progress toward a smarter, more resilient national grid. The initiative reflects German-Bangladeshi cooperation in advancing digital solutions for a resilient and future-ready power system.
