In this Restoration Academy Talk, Roniance Adhiambo shares how the Mijikenda communities of coastal Kenya are restoring their sacred Kaya forests which are vital ecosystems that embody both cultural identity and biodiversity. Through the BGCI’s Kaya Connect project, supported by the Darwin Initiative, local nurseries are producing 250,000 seedlings of 180 native species, creating jobs, and reviving traditional stewardship. By uniting science, indigenous knowledge, and community action, this initiative is transforming restoration into a source of pride, livelihood, and resilience and showing that when people are empowered, nature and culture flourish together.
