In this Restoration Academy Talk, Shwetal Shah spotlights the inspiring work of Kiran, a forest guard in Bhavnagar, Gujarat, who led community-driven mangrove restoration along India’s western coast. Supported by the Indo-German RECAP4NDC project, her team turned degraded coastal land into thriving mangrove ecosystems that protect against cyclones, enhance soil fertility, and boost local fisheries. Despite scepticism and tough terrain, Kiran’s determination and collaboration with villagers revived over 100 hectares of mangroves and showed how grassroots leadership, innovation, and gender inclusion can restore both nature and livelihoods along India’s vulnerable shoreline.
