In5Minutes: Ethiopia to share urbanization experience at #SocialSummit2025

With one of the fastest urbanization rates in Africa, Ethiopia is preparing to share its experience at the Second World Social Summit (#WSSD2 / #SocialSummit2025). In this #In5Minutes conversation, Atkeyelsh (Kitty) Persson, Chief of the Urbanization and Development Section at the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), speaks with Yared Teshome, Senior Policy Advisor at the Ministry of Urban Development and Infrastructure, Ethiopia, about how sustainable urbanization can drive inclusive growth and social development. Mr Teshome notes that Ethiopia’s urbanization rate of 5.4% is among the highest in Africa, well above the continental average of 3.4%, and that the country’s new urban policy and long-term plans are being shaped around the SDGs and Agenda 2063. As he explains, the Doha Summit will be “a great opportunity to learn new insights and recommendations on sustainable urbanization” and to share Ethiopia’s progress in developing new economic zones, creating decent jobs, and reducing poverty through inclusive urban planning.
