Water for Tonga
In Tonga, Oxfam works on disaster-preparedness.
Oxfam's local partners, Civil Society Forum of Tonga (CSFT) and CSFT member, Tonga National Youth Congress (TNYC) are key partners in this effort. CSFT and TNYC's team of staff and volunteers conduct needs assessments after disasters strike (including the HTHH eruption) to help effectively distribute aid. They use desalination units and other technology to clean and purify water for drinking. They also deliver disaster-preparedness trainings on the main island (Tongatapu) as well as across more remote islands throughout the Kingdom, to ensure that people are ready when cyclones and other disasters hit, and do not have to wait for external help in the immediate aftermath. Throughout the year, with or without disasters, TNYC staff and volunteers visit community centres like police stations, schools, churches, and hospitals, cleaning water tanks and purifying drinking water, ensuring that even the most remote villages have access to safe, clean water.
