Patora FSTP: How a Women-Led Sanitation Plant is Turning Waste into Wealth in Rural Chhattisgarh

Problem: In the village of Patora in Chhattisgarh, India, the improper disposal of faecal sludge from septic tanks was a major crisis. Waste was often dumped into open drains and fields, leading to widespread contamination, disease, and an unhealthy environment for the community. Solution: With the support of WaterAid, the community, led by their Sarpanch Anjita Sahu, established the Patora Faecal Sludge Treatment Plant (FSTP)—the first of its kind in rural Chhattisgarh. This innovative plant uses a Planted Drying Bed (PDB) system to safely treat human waste collected from village homes. The entire operation, from sludge collection to processing, is managed by a dedicated group of women from local Self-Help Groups (SHGs). Impact: This groundbreaking initiative has not only solved a critical sanitation problem but has also created sustainable livelihoods and empowered the most marginalized women in the village. They have turned the treated waste into a high-quality organic compost, which they've branded "Swa-Ansh" (meaning "a part of oneself") to reflect their hard work and ownership. Their incredible success was recognized at the highest level when they were honored with the "Swachh Sujal Shakti Samman 2023" by the President of India. This is a powerful story of how local leadership and community participation can transform public health, create economic opportunities, and restore dignity. #WasteToWealth #WomensEmpowerment #Sanitation #WaterAid #Chhattisgarh #SwachhBharat #Sustainability #RuralIndia #Inspiration #MakeADifference
