"The model of international development needs to change profoundly" - Nic Hailey
International Alert's Executive Director, Nic Hailey CMG, was at the UK Houses of Parliament on 20 May 2025, giving evidence to the International Development Select Committee, in the context of upcoming government spending decisions.
Nic outlined the following:
➡️ 80% of all humanitarian needs around the world are driven by conflict.
➡️ 50% of extreme poverty is in conflict-affected places, up from 5% 25 years ago.
While there's been remarkable progress with reducing poverty in stable places, the situation for people living in conflict-affected places is drastically different, and evidence shows they are being left behind.
As global funding for aid and development sharply falls, how might governments and the sector deliver impact in the places it’s most needed?
At International Alert, we believe that investing explicitly in peace, conflict prevention, and social cohesion must be central to the response.
With so much humanitarian need and human cost coming from violent conflicts, we must put greater focus on preventing their root causes, not just treating their symptoms.
Listen to some of Nic’s evidence in the video.
