Making North Carolina Count: Reflections on the Four Decades of Support for the US Census
During his more than 30-year career in state government, Robert "Bob" Coats served as an analyst in the Demographic and Economic Analysis section of the North Carolina Office of State Budget and Management (OSBM), the Governor’s Census Liaison. He supported North Carolina Complete Count Committees promoting participation in the 2000, 2010, and 2020 Censuses. This work included collaboration between North Carolina communities and the US Census Bureau to improve processes and criteria to better count a rapidly growing and increasingly dynamic population.
Bob also served as the coordinator of the North Carolina State Data Center network – a partnership between the US Census Bureau and 45 affiliate organizations statewide.Mallory Bateman, Utah State Data Center Coordinator, also reflected on Bob’s legacy and the work of State Data Centers.
