What the Trump-Xi summit means for tariffs
US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping met in Beijing for a much-anticipated summit last week to discuss the 'Three Big T's:' trade, tariffs, and Taiwan.
According to recent Council-NPR-Ipsos polling, majorities of Americans see tariffs on China as bad for creating jobs in the United States (61%), for the US economy (66%), for their own standard of living and consumers like them (70%), and for the cost of living in the United States (76%). Yet Council Director of Public Opinion and Foreign Policy Craig Kafura says he expects to see tariffs continue "to play a significant role in this administration's economic policy, especially toward China."
"Despite the fact that Americans don't like tariffs on Chinese goods, this is something that Trump has believed is a critical tool for US policy since the 1980s," Kafura said.
