Why authoritarians are coming after comedians all over the world

In response to Jimmy Kimmel's abrupt suspension, Nonresident Senior Fellow Suzanne Nossel wrote a piece for the Los Angeles Times on the threat comedy poses to autocrats. "Having worked at PEN America, we documented cases all over the world [of] authoritarians coming after comedians, and sort of the power of comedy to say what can't be said," Nossel told a Council audience. Nossel joined Nonresident Distinguished Fellow Julián Ventura and Council President & CEO Leslie Vinjamuri to discuss how countries around the world are adapting to Donald Trump's return to the presidency and what it means for US global leadership and international cooperation. -------------------------------------- The Chicago Council on Global Affairs empowers more people to help shape our global future.
