Reviving the Charapa Turtle in Ecuador

Janeth Piaguaje, a Siekopai woman from the Secoya Remolina community in Ecuador, grew up in a territory rich in biodiversity, where the charapa turtle was a constant presence in the rivers. But pollution, hunting and egg harvesting decimated the once thriving turtle populations. With support from Conservacion Internacional Ecuador and Conservation International’s Amazonia Indigenous Women’s Fellowship, Janeth is working to bring the charapa turtle back – monitoring nests, protecting eggs, and helping to raise hatchlings up before releasing them. She’s giving the turtles a fighting chance and bringing the next generation along, making sure the children in her community can grow up understanding why protection matters. From the Siekopai territory and beyond, conservation is #HumanPowered. And this #EarthDay, we’re celebrating the people and communities leading the way. LEARN MORE: conservation.org/earthday
