Restoring Fiji's Mangroves One Seedling at a Time
In Navitilevu Bay, Fiji, the coast is the heartbeat of everyday life. But when Cyclone Winston tore through the island in 2016 it left the mangroves devastated - threatening the shores, livelihoods, and a sense of security that people depend on.
So, the community, alongside Conservation International Fiji, got to work one seedling at a time.
Nearly a decade later, 30 hectares have been restored and over 200,000 seedlings grown through the DFAT Fiji Blue Carbon Project. Building on this progress, the Kiwa RESTORE Project is working to restore a further 20 hectares of mangroves by 2027.
In Navitilevu Bay and beyond, lasting conservation is #HumanPowered. And this #EarthMonth we’re celebrating the people and communities leading the way.
Funded by European Union, @Agence Française de Développement, Canada’s Foreign Policy—Global Affairs Canada, Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and @New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the Kiwa Initiative supports climate change resilience in the Pacific through Nature-based Solutions, in partnership with Pacific-Community-SPC, Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme - SPREP, and IUCN Oceania.
