Biogas: Turning pollution into fuel and fertilizer in Indonesia

Methane gas emissions are extremely harmful for our planet and its inhabitants. Livestock, and especially cattle, contribute up to 19.6% of the methane in our atmosphere. Meanwhile, poorly managed manure pollutes our water and soil. In South Sulawesi, Indonesia, Lutheran World Relief uses biogas systems to help farmers capture the methane from their cows’ manure to keep it out of the atmosphere — and turn both the manure and the methane into useful products for their homes and farms. Biogas systems turn the methane from cow manure into a cooking fuel that, when burned, releases less harmful gases. Biogas systems also break down the manure to produce organic fertilizer. Rice farmer and biogas operator Abdul Salam says, “When we use a chemical fertilizer, the paddy will usually have many diseases. The use of an organic fertilizer usually reduces the diseases … Since we use biogas, diseases are diminishing.” He also says his family used to sell 1-2 kg of chilis per season, and since using the bio-slurry fertilizer they now sell 4-5 kg. Senniati, the secretary of a local women’s farming cooperative, says her family no longer has to buy any chemical fertilizers — an immense savings. Using the biogas system has also reduced her cooking gas purchases from three tanks per month to just one. Biogas has not only created savings for her family; it has also increased their income by 2x to 5x per month, depending on the season.
