Media Freedom Through Transnational Lenses: Insights from Montenegro and North Macedonia

This webinar presents key findings from two shadow reports examining the state of media freedom in both countries. Experts discuss recent progress, ongoing challenges, and recommendations for EU and national stakeholders. In Montenegro, reforms have strengthened public broadcaster independence, transparency, and self-regulation, yet political influence, weak law enforcement, and foreign interference persist. In North Macedonia, reduced violence against journalists and legal progress are offset by disinformation, political and economic pressure, fragile regulation, and declining trust. Both countries, as EU accession candidates, offer critical insights into how media freedom and democratic resilience intersect with European integration. More about MFRR: www.mfrr.eu
