Satire on Trial: The Case of Leman and the Shrinking Space for Media in Turkey

In this webinar hosted by the Media Freedom Rapid Response (MFRR), we explored the state-backed crackdown on LeMan, one of Turkey’s leading satirical magazines, following the publication of a cartoon deemed offensive by religious and political figures. The arrest of four staff members and the intensifying pressure on the publication mark a dangerous escalation in Turkey’s assault on press freedom and artistic expression. Through the lens of this case, our panel examines the broader decline of media freedom in Turkey, the legal and political mechanisms of repression, and the role of international solidarity in defending dissenting voices.
