One year on: Media freedom and journalist safety in Serbia

This webinar examines the state of media freedom and journalist safety in Serbia one year after the Novi Sad train canopy collapse on 1 November 2024 and the mass anti-government protests that followed. The discussion looks at how the government’s response to the crisis has accelerated political pressure on independent media, fuelled attacks on reporters, and deepened the climate of impunity for violence against journalists. Timed to coincide with the UN International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, the event brings together frontline reporters and experts to assess how Serbia has reached a new low point for press freedom and what is at stake for the future of democratic accountability. Speakers: Natasa Kovačev (Freelance Journalist), Verica Marinčić (IN Medija), Dušan Mladenović (N1). Moderator: Jasmijn de Zeeuw (Free Press Unlimited). More about MFRR: www.mfrr.eu
