How the PSSB improves elderly well-being in Mozambique
This video summarizes key findings from a 2024 impact study of the Basic Social Subsidy Programme for the Elderly (PSSB-Elderly), conducted under the Inclusive Growth in Mozambique (IGM) programme.
The PSSB is Mozambique’s largest publicly funded social assistance programme, with over 450,000 elderly beneficiaries. While highly valued by recipients, the programme faces critical challenges, including limited coverage, extended payment delays, and long waitlists. In some areas, fewer than 20% of eligible elderly individuals received any payments in 2024. Delays significantly undermine the programme’s intended impact, worsening food insecurity and household poverty. Beneficiaries also adjust their household composition and expectations in anticipation of eventual enrolment.
The video presents evidence-based policy recommendations to strengthen the delivery, financing, and sustainability of PSSB-Elderly and ensure more consistent support for Mozambique’s vulnerable population.
