One house, one tap approach and community ownership: Kalitar Sustainable Project

The Kalitar Sustainable WASH project, funded by the Coca Cola Foundation is a tri-party collaboration among the WaterAid Nepal (WAN), Godavari Municipality, and Centre for Integrated Urban Development (CIUD). This project has been implemented at Ward number 6 of the Godawari Municipality to complement the municipality’s overall WASH plan, which aims to deliver safe, sufficient, accessible, acceptable, and affordable drinking water to 151 households and to improve the hygiene behaviors of the people from the community. The Kalitar Sustainable Project provided the technical and financial support to achieve the municipality's aim of a “one house one tap” approach covering 100 percent of the population of Ward 6. The project also engaged the community members by conducting several hygiene behaviour sessions to build the local beneficiaries' capacity and ensure community ownership for a sustainable water supply mechanism. The Kalitar Sustainable Project is an example of a successful collaboration between the government and the community, illustrates the accountability of all the concerned stakeholders, highlights the importance of community-led initiatives, and demonstrates the dynamics of safe and sustainable WASH approaches.
