Dr Abdul Jibril Njai: Building a Healthier Sierra Leone Through Stronger Health Systems

From losing two siblings to malaria as a child to becoming one of Sierra Leone’s most promising health system leaders, Dr Abdul Jibril Njai’s story is one of resilience, purpose and deep commitment. He realised early in his career that treating patients was not enough. Families were struggling with access and affordability. Facilities were facing funding gaps. Systems were failing. He knew that real change required more than clinical care. “This is my passion. This is what keeps me up at night,” he says. Through the Health Systems and Financing Accelerator Fellowship Program, Dr Njai developed a bold health reform topic: “Free Healthcare Policy for Sierra Leone: Framework, Financing, and Implementation Pathways.” His vision is clear. A resilient, self-sustaining health system built on strong institutions, empowered communities and domestic financing that ensures no Sierra Leonean is left behind. This is his journey. This is his impact.
