UN DESA DISD Webinar on "Global Inequality: What Do Better Data Really Tell Us?"
This webinar was organized by the Division for Inclusive Social Development (DISD) of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA).
Recent advances in global inequality data have improved our understanding of how income is distributed across countries and within societies. Yet, even with better data and methods, leading inequality databases (UNU-WIDER's World Income Inequality Database (WIID), World Inequality Database, World Bank's Poverty and Inequality Platform) produce different estimates of inequality levels because they make distinct choices about welfare concepts, data sources, and how to handle top incomes.
This talk explores why these differences persist, what they mean for international comparisons and policy narratives, and how researchers can interpret and communicate inequality statistics more effectively. We will also explore with WIID what do we know about inequality and relative growth trends in sub-Saharan African countries.
