UN DESA DISD Webinar on MTUS+: A New Generation of Data for Understanding Unpaid Care Work
This webinar was organized by the Division for Inclusive Social Development (DISD) of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA). The presenters are Prof. Oriel Sullivan and Dr. Juana Lamote de Grignon-Perez from University College London.
Accurately measuring unpaid care work—such as childcare, housework, and family support—has long been a challenge, as traditional surveys rely on stylised questions prone to bias, with inconsistent and unreliable estimates. Time‑use diaries provide more reliable data by recording full‑day activities, reducing recall errors and capturing daily complexity.
The Multinational Time Use Study (MTUS) has long supported this research and MTUS+ represents the next evolution, expanding global coverage, integrating more detailed activity classifications (such as ICATUS), and better capturing simultaneous activities—an essential feature of unpaid care work. It also enhances household-level data, allowing researchers to better understand how family structure shapes care responsibilities.
