How Guarantees Can Expand Energy Access in Burundi
Burundi has one of the lowest electricity access rates in the world. MIGA, home of the World Bank Group Guarantee Platform, is supporting a smartly blended solution to help make energy access more viable and affordable at scale.
The structure brings together a $10.9 million MIGA guarantee, IDA support through a grant and first-loss risk-sharing layer, and IFC financing and expertise for the new utility.
Together, these instruments help reduce risks, mobilize private investment, and support the expansion of clean, affordable electricity in rural and suburban communities.
The project supports Weza Power, launched by Anzana, and aims to reach 9 million people by 2030. It also contributes to Mission 300, which seeks to connect 300 million people in Africa to electricity.
