Migration Diplomacy After the EU’s Asylum Reform

Migration Diplomacy After the EU’s Asylum Reform

Shortly after the reform of the Common European Asylum System (CEAS) entered into force, we turn to the European Union’s migration diplomacy. As the viability of the reformed system depends to a significant degree on cooperation with countries outside Europe’s borders, we focus on how the EU can effectively cooperate with third countries. Drawing on a new DGAP Report, we will explore where such cooperation is working, where it is falling short, and what the reform moment means for the EU’s relationships with these countries. Speakers: Erik Marquardt, Member of the European Parliament, Greens/European Free Alliance Sedef Dearing, Deputy Director General and Director Migration Dialogues and Cooperation, International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) Svenja Niederfranke, Research Fellow, Center for Migration, DGAP Chair: Isabelle Schäfer, Research Fellow, Center for Migration, DGAP Highlights: 00:00 Introduction (Schäfer) 06:53 Where the EU and partner countries diverge and converge (Dearing) 17:39 EU migration diplomacy effectiveness (Niederfranke) 25:26 Upcoming developments (Marquardt) 31:25 Possible improvements (Niederfranke) 38:30 Q&A 📺 Watch more DGAP's Morning Briefings here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLM4GTxipxHs8Y5tAXTQuthxiF_EHLdOpj 📩 Receive invitations to events like this by subscribing to our newsletter: https://on.dgap.org/ENnewsletter 📢 Follow DGAP on social media: https://www.x.com/dgapev https://www.linkedin.com/company/german-council-on-foreign-relations https://www.x.com/dgapev https://bsky.app/profile/dgap.org https://www.instagram.com/dgapev #ForeignPolicy #migration #EU
