Alternative Development in Lao PDR and Myanmar

Alternative Development in Lao PDR and Myanmar

In the hills and mountains of Southeast Asia, farming families faced a difficult choice. Grow opium poppy, or have nothing. For over 30 years, UNODC has been working to change that by offering them another opportunity. We work in Lao PDR and Myanmar to support rural communities in their transition to cultivating crops like coffee and tea. UNODC's Alternative Development programme has improved the incomes of 1,500+ farmers in Myanmar and 1,300 in Lao PDR, contributing to the stability and development of regions affected by illegal economies.
