Behind the world’s containers

Over 90% of the world’s trade travels by sea, but fewer than 2% of containers are checked. That means drugs, weapons, falsified medicines or trafficked wildlife can slip through hidden among everyday goods. Port Control Units change that. By bringing customs, police and specialized officers together, they use data and risk analysis to spot suspicious shipments without slowing global trade. With training and support from UNODC, these teams made over 2,600 seizures in 2024 alone.
