Africa Youth Month: Spotlight on young scientists working to end malaria

November is Africa Youth Month, and this year we spotlighted two scientists working to #EndMalaria in Uganda. Rita Mwima and Hudson Onen of #TargetMalariaUganda at Uganda Virus Research Institute joined us for a webinar to discuss their career journeys and inspire the next generation of young scientists in Africa! Rita is a computational biologist whose PhD research uses population genetics and mathematical modeling to understand how malaria-transmitting mosquitoes persist through dry seasons and rebound with rainfall, informing the evaluation of new vector control tools and malaria control strategies in Africa. Hudson, the Field Entomology Lead and a final-year PhD student at Makerere University, has worked with the Uganda Virus Research Institute since 2016 under Target Malaria. His research examines the adaptive oviposition behavior and dispersal of Anopheles gambiae s.l., using field studies in Tanzania and genetic analyses to support advances in mosquito ecology, surveillance, and bioinformatics.
