Toward a Sustainable Tourism in Tunisia

Toward a Sustainable Tourism in Tunisia

Tourism is a pillar of the Tunisian economy. Nevertheless, it places significant pressure on natural resources and remains vulnerable to the effects of climate change. Aware of these challenges, Tunisia has launched the National Strategy for Sustainable Tourism Development 2035, which aims to reconcile economic growth, environmental protection, and the promotion of local know-how by drawing on ecotourism and the blue economy. Within this framework, and with support from the World Bank through Technical Assistance financed by the Global Program on Sustainability (GPS) and implemented by the OSS, Tunisia is now integrating ecosystem accounting into planning for the tourism sector. This innovative approach makes it possible to assess tourism’s impacts on the environment and to steer public policies toward tourism that is more responsible, sustainable, and resilient. Discover the video dedicated to this initiative. It showcases the richness of Tunisia’s natural and cultural heritage while illustrating the opportunities offered by sustainable tourism, and it underscores that ecotourism can be a true driver of green growth, environmental protection, and the development of local communities. Through images and inspiring testimonials, the video invites us to place natural capital at the heart of choices and development strategies for a more sustainable future.
