AI superpowers and the great race

AI superpowers and the great race

Whether it’s frontier AI models such as GPT-5, Gemini, Claude and DeepSeek, or the broader AI stack down to advanced chips, the most closely watched race is between the United States and China. This session examined what is at stake in this competition and the geopolitical implications of “winning” it. Panellists explored what “winning” actually means, as a growing number of voices argue that integration and adoption of AI — rather than pushing the frontier to AGI or superintelligence — will determine success. Speakers included You-Hao Lai, Deputy Director, Democratic Governance Program, Research Institute for Democracy, Society and Emerging Technology, and Selina Xu, Head of China, AI Research and Strategic Initiatives, Office of Eric Schmidt. This session was moderated by Jisoo Kim, Co-Founder and Director, ClearAI.
