Powering Pentecost: Handover of Community Hydro Systems Brings 24/7 Electricity

On 24 March, the communities of Waterfall, Melsisi and Larimaat gathered to mark the official handover of three pico-hydro power stations under the Vanuatu Green Transformation (VGET) Project, funded by the Government of Japan. The ceremony brought together the Minister of Climate Change, the Ambassador of Japan to Vanuatu, and UNDP Pacific’s Deputy Resident Representative, alongside chiefs, community leaders, and residents. This handover places ownership in the hands of the communities themselves — with 26 settlements on Pentecost Island now connected to reliable 24/7 renewable electricity. A total of 706 connections are powering homes, schools, health centres, community halls, and small businesses. This video captures a moment of transition — from project delivery to community stewardship — powered by the rivers of Pentecost.
