The powerhouses and weirs have been completed at the 3 Vanuatu Green Transformation (VGET) project worksites, and a new phase of construction begun to install the penstoke, followed by trenching and cabling.
The penstokes channel the water collected at the weir to the powerhouse where turbines spin generating the electricity that cables conduct to every household.
The project is creating an electrical network of 35 kilometers trenched by remunerated community work at vuv 10,000 per each 300 meters, connecting at least 26 settlements.
Cables conduct the generated electricity to 706 households, 67 businesses and 43 institutions, electrifying 16 per cent of Pentecost population.
The Vanuatu Green Transformation (VGET) Project is Vanuatu’s component of the Japan-funded Pacific Green Transformation Project, implemented by UNDP. It supports the country’s transition to a low-carbon, climate-resilient future by expanding access to clean, affordable, and reliable energy — in line with Vanuatu’s National Energy Road Map to achieve 100% renewable energy by 2030. The VGET Project focuses on renewable energy infrastructure such as pico-hydro systems and solar solutions, while promoting inclusive green growth by engaging communities, youth, women, and vulnerable groups to benefit from new economic and climate opportunities.
