On International Green Energy Day, we are glad to share a new video marking the start of Phase 2 of the Vanuatu Green Transformation Project (VGET) with the construction of the fourth renewable energy power station on Pentecost Island β this time in Nambwarangiut community, Northern Pentecost.
Implemented by UNDP in partnership with the Department of Energy of the Ministry of Climate Change Adaptation, Meteorology and Geo-Hazards, Energy, Environment and National Disaster Management, and funded by the Government of Italy, this new station will be a hybrid system combining solar and pico-hydro power β a first of its kind under VGET.
π What this means for communities
Hybrid system: 3.49 kW pico-hydro + 25 kWp solar
67,090 kWh of clean electricity generated annually
33 kWh battery storage, ensuring reliability
6.8 km of new electricity distribution network
167 prepaid connections, reaching 141 households and 787 residents
24/7 off-grid clean energy for schools, health centres, community halls and small businesses
π Beyond infrastructure
VGET is creating green jobs, strengthening government technical capacity, and building long-term community skills to operate and maintain renewable energy systems. Women, youth and persons with disabilities are placed at the centre of the transition β ensuring that clean energy also delivers inclusive development, better health and education services, stronger livelihoods, and greater climate resilience.
With an investment of USD 1 million, Phase 2 will help reduce fossil-fuel dependence and cut 146.8 tCOβ (0.15 Gg) of emissions by 2030, contributing directly to Vanuatuβs National Energy Road Map and the countryβs ambition of 100% renewable electrification by 2030.
π₯ Watch the video and see how clean energy is powering opportunity, resilience and a greener future for Northern Pentecost.
