For three weeks, baby Francis was treated for neonatal sepsis. His story reflects a challenge faced by hospitals around the world as drug-resistant infections threaten the lives of newborns.
In this video, we look at how researchers and clinicians in Kenya are working to identify better treatment options for newborns with sepsis.
The NeoSep1 clinical trial, led by the Global Antibiotic Research & Development Partnership (GARDP) and partners, is evaluating antibiotic combinations to improve care for newborns with life-threatening infections.
The study is enrolling newborns at hospitals in Kenya, including:
Kilifi County Hospital
Mbagathi Hospital in Nairobi
Coast General Teaching & Referral Hospital in Mombasa
These sites are part of a larger international study that aims to enroll 3,000 newborns across Africa and Asia by 2028. The evidence generated through the trial will help identify effective antibiotic treatments and support updates to WHO treatment guidelines for neonatal sepsis.
The research is conducted in collaboration with City St George’s, University of London; the MRC Clinical Trials Unit at University College London; and Penta – Child Health Research.
