Who Does the Caring? A Grassroots Perspective from Mexico

For Margarita Peláez Flores — activist, caregiver, and grassroots woman leader from Ciudad Valles, San Luis Potosí — care work is political. In this video, Margarita shares how she and her fellow community members in MUDECI are reframing care: not as a private burden that falls on women, but as a public issue essential to sustainable development. Through grassroots organizing, they have built community support networks, advocated for women's rights to land and territory, and stepped in as first responders during crises — including COVID-19 — when the State fell short. "Care work is exhausting, but my colleagues in the community always encourage me to keep going — and to keep faith that one day those of us who care will be able to do so under better conditions." MUDECI – Mujeres, Democracia y Ciudadanía, A.C. is a member of the Huairou Commission (🌐 huairou.org), a global network of grassroots women's organizations building locally led solutions for just and resilient communities.
