Lao PDR Adopts SpO₂ as the Fifth Vital Sign

The Ministry of Health in Lao PDR has officially recognized SpO₂ (oxygen saturation) as the fifth vital sign nationwide, joining pulse, temperature, blood pressure, and respiration. This milestone is part of the National Oxygen Strategy and reflects the leadership of the MoH, the dedication of health workers, and the support of partners working together to strengthen patient care. Measuring oxygen saturation with a pulse oximeter is a simple, low-cost intervention that allows health workers to identify life-threatening conditions such as pneumonia, respiratory failure, and complications from surgery or childbirth more quickly. By making SpO₂ a standard part of routine monitoring, patients across the country will benefit from earlier detection and faster treatment. This achievement reflects the strong leadership of the Ministry of Health and the collaboration of health workers and partners who have supported the rollout of oxygen access and training. It is a reminder of the progress that can be made when governments, providers, and partners work together toward a common goal. By embedding SpO₂ as a vital sign across all levels of care, Lao PDR is building a stronger, more resilient health system and setting an important example for the region.
