ISA celebrates the mentees of S.H.E.
A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of hosting a private breakfast mentoring session with the mentees of our See Her Exceed (S.H.E.) initiative, created under the umbrella of the ISA Women in Deep-Sea Research Programme.
It was an informal yet inspiring conversation on leadership, resilience, and professional growth as women in ocean science. I truly valued the one-to-one engagement, where the mentees were able to ask questions, share reflections, and receive tailored advice directly from me as ISA Secretary-General.
I was honoured to welcome six outstanding women to the ISA Headquarters in Kingston, Jamaica. These participants, from Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tunisia, and Morocco, contributed to international processes and explored cutting-edge tools such as artificial intelligence for ocean science. These are not side achievements; they are indicators of what is possible when women are fully supported to lead.
I also want to extend my heartfelt thanks to the Government of France for their steadfast support of the S.H.E. Programme. Their sponsorship has been instrumental to its success and impact. Thanks to this partnership, key initiatives have flourished, including the S.H.E. RISE Award presented to mentee Lucy Njue of Kenya and a webinar on women in deep-sea technology. Their support continues to create meaningful opportunities for women to lead, innovate, and steward our shared ocean.
I invite you to watch a short video highlighting key moments from the breakfast session.
Leticia Carvalho, ISA Secretary-General.
