Learning, Growing, Leading: Women Make a Difference

In the Sundarbans, climate change is disrupting fishing, farming, and everyday life. Rising salinity, erosion, and declining fish populations are making traditional livelihoods more uncertain than ever. But women are not standing still. This new short film highlights how women in the Sundarbans are building resilience through new skills, stronger land and resource rights, and collective leadership. With support from Landesa and partners, women are gaining technical knowledge, confidence, and recognition as farmers and fishers. They are expanding their livelihoods to reduce pressure on fragile mangrove ecosystems and learning how land recordation and fisher registration strengthen their ability to access credit, government services, and long-term security. Subhadra Naskar, President of the Maa Mahamaya Mahila SHG shared: "For the first time, women are receiving this training to be self-reliant. Earlier, only men had access to such opportunities, and we were confined within the four walls of our homes." Now, women are moving from survival to self-reliance, while helping protect one of the world’s most important ecosystems.
