[Co-CREATE Forum] SRM Research Governance: An Introduction from the Co-CREATE Project

We welcome you to the plenaries of the Co-CREATE Forum on Solar ‎Radiation Modification Research ‎Governance, livestreamed on 27–29 May 2026 from Brussels, Belgium‎.‎ Disclaimer: We ask everyone to be aware of the conference’s ‎ ‎ code of conduct, noting that anyone not ‎complying with these principles will be expelled from the livestream.‎ Session Description: ‎ Climate change is worsening fast, and some researchers are exploring Solar Radiation Modification (SRM) as ‎a possible way to temporarily cool the planet. With research funding from governments and philanthropies ‎growing, commercial actors entering the space, and field experiments multiplying, this public panel offers an ‎accessible introduction to SRM and the governance challenges this topic presents. A panel of ‎interdisciplinary experts from across the Co-Create project will introduce the different dimensions of a ‎responsible governance approach for SRM research, before opening up for audience questions. The session ‎will touch on the science, societal viewpoints, international law, governance guidelines and ethics that will ‎be explored in more detail throughout the rest of the conference.‎ Speakers: ‎ • Peter Irvine (Assistant Professor, University of Chicago)‎ • Matthias Honegger (Senior Consultant, Perspectives Climate Research)‎ • Dominic Lenzi (Assistant Professor, University of Twente)‎ • Christine Merk (Researcher, Kiel Institute)‎ • Julie Vinders (Senior Research Analyst, Trilateral Research)‎ About the Co-CREATE Forum: ‎ The Co-CREATE Forum on Solar ‎Radiation Modification Research Governance is organised as part of Co-‎CREATE, a project funded by the European Union under Horizon Europe ‎and by UK Research and Innovation ‎‎(UKRI). Co-CREATE brings together a consortium of European ‎institutions. Over three years, we are working ‎with policymakers, research funders, ethics committees, and ‎stakeholders worldwide to develop principles, ‎guidelines, and decision-support frameworks for responsible ‎SRM research governance. The Forum aims to ‎inform the project’s work, contributing to an integrated set of ‎principles, guidelines, and decision-support ‎frameworks for policymakers, funders, and ethics bodies. This ‎ensures responsible SRM research and ‎governance aligned with European and global public interests.‎ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FOLLOW CLIMATE STRATEGIES WEBSITE: https://www.climatestrategies.org TWITTER: https://twitter.com/climatestrat FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/CStrategies LINKEDIN: https://www.linkedin.com/company/climate-strategies EMAIL: info@climatestrategies.org
