Magawa wasn’t just a rat — he was a hero.
This making-of video takes you behind the scenes of the world’s first monument dedicated to a life-saving rat, carved by the talented artisans at Satcha Cambodian Handicraft Center. Standing 2.2 metres tall on a landmine-shaped pedestal in Siem Reap (home to the Angkor Wat temples), it’s a tribute to Magawa’s incredible legacy.
Magawa, an African Giant Pouched Rat born and trained in Tanzania, detected over 100 landmines and explosives during his career at APOPO in Cambodia, helping clear the equivalent of 20 football pitches — and became the only rat awarded the PDSA Gold Medal for animal bravery.
This new landmark, unveiled for International Mine Awareness Day, guides people to the APOPO Visitor Center, where you can learn more about the global landmine problem and how our HeroRATs help.
