Children at the Centre of Climate Action, Leading Change in Wajir’s Harsh Climate
In the harsh, climate-affected landscapes of Wajir County, children are stepping up as leaders in the fight against climate change.
At Wajir Full Primary School, learners are no longer just studying climate change in textbooks; they are actively shaping solutions. Through tree planting, kitchen gardening, and environmental conservation, they are transforming their school into a greener, more resilient space.
Supported by Save the Children’s Watoto na Mazingira programme (Child-Centred Climate Action), children are gaining practical skills that go beyond the classroom—helping them respond to the realities of drought, floods, and extreme heat that affect their daily lives.
From planting trees to growing food, students like Yasmin Yussuf and Samira Abdi Mohamud are becoming agents of change—taking what they learn in school back to their homes and communities.
With support from Save the Children and partners, a solar-powered water system now sustains the school’s greening efforts—creating lasting impact and empowering children to not just survive climate challenges, but lead the solutions.
