Sugarcane to Jaggery- Rurukshetra’s Sweet Boom

Rurukshetra Rural Municipality in Gulmi, Nepal is renowned for its traditional production of Thorgeli Gud (solid jaggery) and Khudo (liquid jaggery). For centuries, jaggery making relied on labor-intensive wooden and ox-driven mills, but with support from Heifer Project Nepal and the Ruru Multipurpose Cooperative, a modern electric processing plant now produces high-quality jaggery in under 2 hours. This initiative has revitalized the local sugarcane industry, improved incomes, empowered women and youth, and expanded markets across Gulmi, Palpa, Butwal, Chitwan, Pokhara, Kathmandu, Syangja, Rupandehi, and Arghakhachi. With sustainable technology, fair pricing, and “Thorgeli” trademark registration, Rurukshetra is turning sugarcane into sweet opportunities for farmers and their communities.
