Presenting the Mediterranean's Remaining Carbon Budget at COP24
At COP24 in Cairo, OceanCare and BC3 - Basque Centre for Climate Change presented our carbon budget analysis to Mediterranean decision-makers.
We were honored to have Dr. Ilias Mavroeides from the UNEP/MAP Secretariat give the introductory remarks. OceanCare’s Director of International Relations Nicolas Entrup then led through the session.
Dr. María Victoria Román presented the stark findings: At current emission rates, the Mediterranean's Remaining Carbon Budget will be exhausted by 2035, pushing the region beyond the Paris Agreement's 2°C threshold. ⚠️
But the report also shows a pathway forward. Staying within the 2°C limit remains achievable – if Mediterranean countries commit to coordinated regional efforts with annual emission reductions of around 6% on average from 2030. The side event brought together important stakeholders to discuss the critical nexus between marine conservation and climate action. 🌊
Thank you to our panelists for the constructive exchange:
🔹 Dr. Lionel Launois, Ministry for Ecological Transition, France
🔹 Dr. Mustafa Baskara, DEHUKAM & UNEP/MAP Climate Change RAC
🔹 Dr. Mohamed Abdel Monem, Senior Advisor for Climate Change and Rural Development, MedECC
🔹 Carlos Bravo, Ocean Policy Expert, OceanCare
Over the coming days, we'll continue advocating for Mediterranean countries to integrate ambitious climate action into the Convention's work. Because protecting the climate means protecting the Ocean – and the Mediterranean cannot afford to wait. The science is on the table. Now it's time for policy to deliver
