About SAvE Whales:
This innovative system (System for the Avoidance of ship-strikes with Endangered Whales) addresses the greatest threat to sperm whales: collisions with ships. Using pioneering technology, it serves as a complementary tool to protect this critical population, first discovered in the Hellenic Trench in 1998.
A true collaborative effort:
Scientists, civil society, and the Greek government are joining forces to harness innovation for marine biodiversity protection. Following a successful pilot project (2019-2021), a Memorandum of Understanding signed in June 2024 provides for full implementation of the system in the Kythira Strait by 2028.
