The Mediterranean is the most overfished sea globally, impacted by plastic pollution, underwater noise, and other harmful human activities. ⚠️ But climate change is the threat multiplier – accelerating impacts on ecosystems, coastal areas, and people. Example: Warming waters reduce zooplankton productivity in the Northwestern Mediterranean, cutting food availability for fin whales. A significant COP24 outcome: Mediterranean countries endorsed a Climate Change Regional Activity Centre (CC/RAC), now operational and based in Ankara, Türkiye. This is a positive development, as it will include advising and supporting countries on mitigation efforts – not just adaptation. 👉 What's needed next: a Regional Climate Change Mitigation Plan.
