The Mediterranean’s Remaining Carbon Budget: Why the Region Needs a Joint Mitigation Plan
🌊 The Mediterranean Talks About Climate Impacts – But Not Enough About Solutions
For years, the Barcelona Convention has discussed climate change impacts on the Mediterranean: adaptation strategies, resilience building. Important conversations. But there's a critical gap: mitigation.
Concrete plans for reducing emissions at the regional level? Largely absent. This is why OceanCare commissioned the carbon budget analysis.
We asked: What's the Mediterranean's Remaining Carbon Budget? How should emission reductions be distributed to meet the Paris Agreement?
After one year with BC3 - Basque Centre for Climate Change, we have the answer:
⚠️ At current emission rates: carbon budget exhausted by 2035
✅ What's needed: on average, 6% annual reductions (2030-2050)
👉 The next step: Mediterranean countries must agree on a regional mitigation plan. Not just adaptation. Not just impact studies. Actual emission reduction commitments. This week at COP24, we're pushing for exactly that.
