Hanging wall gardens could be a simple, green fix for rising urban heat 🌱🌡️
In many informal settlements, homes are poorly insulated and lack air conditioning — leaving residents with little escape from extreme temperatures. As cities heat up, nature-based solutions are proving their value.
In Nigeria and Tanzania, researchers tested vertical gardens made from leafy vegetables grown in horizontal PVC pipes and hung on house walls in low-income neighbourhoods.
🌿 The results?
• Wall surfaces up to 10°C cooler
• Indoor temperatures reduced by up to 5°C
• Fresh vegetables for households
Cooling homes, improving comfort, and providing healthy food — all at once.
