Earthquakes are inevitable, disasters are not: A message from Kamal Kishore | UNDRR

🌍 Earthquakes are inevitable but the disasters they cause are not. On the International Day in Memory of the Victims of Earthquakes, 29 April, Kamal Kishore, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction, shares a powerful message of remembrance and resilience. Drawing on visits to Türkiye and Japan, this message reflects on the human cost of earthquakes—and the urgent need to act. The message highlights three key actions to reduce earthquake risk: 🏗️ Build and retrofit infrastructure to withstand seismic hazards 📢 Raise public awareness through preparedness campaigns like Drop, Cover, and Hold On 📊 Strengthen data collection to better understand impacts and build back better Tools such as the Sendai Framework Monitor and UNDRR’s DELTA resilience database system support countries in turning lessons into action. 🙏 This day honours those we have lost—and calls on all of us to build a safer, more resilient future.
