UPU Regional Development Plan: Asia-Pacific

How can postal operators in Asia-Pacific adapt to declining mail volumes while seizing new opportunities through digital transformation? In this video, Thakur Subhash Sinha, UPU Asia-Pacific Region and South-South, Triangular Cooperation Coordinator, discusses the key challenges and opportunities shaping postal development in the Asia-Pacific region, from the steep decline in letter mail volumes and growing competition from courier and e-commerce companies to the expanding role of IT, AI and end-to-end digitization. At the same time, the region is seeing major opportunities through financial services, post banks, remittances, government services and social benefit distribution. As postal networks become increasingly digital, post offices are evolving into one-stop shops that provide a wider range of services to communities. The Regional Development Plan for Asia-Pacific supports countries through projects such as Operational Readiness for E-commerce Plus, expert missions, process and security reviews, quality-of-service support and digital tools provided by the UPU. With a focus on modernization, service quality, international remittances and support for rural communities, entrepreneurs and MSMEs, the plan aims to help postal operators fulfil their social obligations while remaining commercially viable.
