Overcoming Taboos in Female Sexuality: Krista’s Journey in Rwanda

Episode Episode hosted by Pierre-Christophe Dagher Falardeau, Program Officer in Women's Economic Empowerment at CECI.  Social Media Introduction “One of the major issues in Rwanda is beliefs and taboos. They prevent women from being fully empowered and making decisions about their own health, including their informed consent regarding sexual relations.”   Podcast Description Episode hosted by Pierre-Christophe Dagher Falardeau, Program Officer in Women's Economic Empowerment at CECI.  Krista shares her four-month experience in Rwanda with CECI, where she was able to strengthen her expertise in human rights. During her term, she worked with the local NGO, the Network of Women in Rwanda, as a Gender-Based Violence Prevention Officer. Her work primarily focused on access to sexual health resources and raising awareness of reproductive rights.  In Rwanda, especially in rural areas, it can be difficult to access informed and objective information on sexual health issues. This is further complicated by certain cultural practices and limitations caused by taboos or beliefs that hinder the dissemination of this information to local communities.  Krista Briffet, originally from Ontario, is currently working in Aix-en-Provence, France. She holds a bachelor's degree in social work and a master's degree in international human rights.  --- The CECI Volunteer Cooperation Program is funded by the Government of Canada. Find out our volunteering opportunities : https://ceci.org/en/volunteering
