Learning Together: How Reciprocity Transforms Volunteer Mandates, part 2

Episode hosted by Pierre-Christophe Dagher Falardeau, Programme Officer in Women's Economic Empowerment at CECI.  In this episode, we explore a key question: Is reciprocity the norm in international volunteering? Through the experience of volunteer Jenelle Katrine Nicolajsen-Gasana, we discover how this approach can transform relationships between volunteers and local partners.  We take a closer look at CECI’s Women Entrepreneurs in Solidarity program, inspired by a Norwegian model that promotes equitable South-North and North-South exchanges. Drawing from real-life experiences in Bolivia, Senegal, and soon in Rwanda, we examine how reciprocal mentorship—even at a distance—can enrich both communities and volunteers alike.  This podcast also reflects on the intentions behind undertaking an international mandate: humility, openness, and a willingness to learn—essential keys to living an authentic experience, far from neocolonial approaches.  Jenelle Katrine Nicolajsen-Gasana holds academic training in international development, social entrepreneurship, and holistic women’s wellness. She has participated in numerous programs and initiatives across East Africa.  Most recently, she completed a mandate under CECI’s Volunteer Cooperation Program as a Socio-Economic Empowerment Advisor for Women with PSF – Specialized Cluster in Kigali, Rwanda.  --- CECI’s Volunteer Cooperation Program is funded by the Government of Canada. Find out for our volunteering opportunities : https://ceci.org/en/volunteering
