On 6 May 2026, Pauliina Nykanen-Rettaroli, Senior Technical Lead on Human Rights at the World Health Organization (WHO, participated in a thematic discussion on "Commemorating 25 Years of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action: Strengthening Implementation and Closing the Gaps."
The discussion was organized by the United Nations Group of Independent Eminent Experts on the Implementation of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action during its 12th session held at the United Nations Office at Geneva.
The Group of Independent Eminent Experts functions as an advisory mechanism for the UN Human Rights Council and the UN General Assembly on the implementation of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action. It works towards mobilizing global political will for concrete action to implement the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action.
WHO is the United Nations agency that connects nations, partners and people to promote health, keep the world safe and serve the vulnerable – so everyone, everywhere can attain the highest level of health.
Health is a fundamental right of every human being. Health as a human right is recognized in the WHO Constitution (1948), the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) and many international and regional human rights treaties. All WHO Member States have ratified at least one treaty that recognizes the right to the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health.
